It's been a little scary around here lately and I'm not just referring to the crazy schedule that we've been keeping. We are in full blown Halloween mode this week!
These cute little children could be found loitering in the neighborhood looking for candy on Wednesday evening. But more about that later...
We began our festivities last Thursday with some good old fashioned pumpkin carving. Cooper and Kinley did a superb job cleaning off the pumpkins. Well, Cooper did. Kinley more or less just shredded the paper towels into a million tiny pieces. I have to say that one of my biggest challenges as a mother lately is meeting the needs of all three kids, all of different ages, at the same time. This was the only night we had time to carve pumpkins. It also happened to be a night that Earl was working late. And so it was a challenge to help McKenna and Cooper carve pumpkins while making sure Kinley did not slip in pumpkin goo or otherwise impale herself on carving tools, all while trying to keep the mess on the mat.
Which kept her from trying to eat pumpkin seeds which is how this ended up. Oops!
And I'm afraid that's where their involvement in the project pretty much ended. While McKenna was a trooper and did most of her own pumpkin preparation and carving this year, the other kids bailed out.
This was the only time Cooper touched the inside of the pumpkin at which time he exclaimed, "This smells like puke." He did rejoin the group to draw a face on his pumpkin, as well as ears and arms. That was interesting. But, we managed to figure out how to accomplish both and he was a happy camper.
I'm sure you can pick Cooper's out there in the middle. It's the one with the nubby little arms. The face on McKenna's (far left) still makes me laugh as does Kinley's because it sort of resembles the newest face she makes!
October 31st was a busy day filled with my first duties as a home room mom. I've always wanted to serve in McKenna's classroom in this capacity but it just never worked out until this year. I'm glad to have the opportunity to share in so many special projects with her this year. For Halloween this year the kids did a pumpkin exploration. They weighed, measured and then carved pumpkins. They had a great time, worked well in their small groups and of course were rewarded with yummy snacks at the end.
As soon as school was over we headed home and got into costumes so that we could be ready for the second annual Bailey Halloween Party. Our neighbors hosted a halloween party last year prior to the beginning of trick or treat. It was a huge hit and the kids were eager for this year's party too. They were so nervous that Hurricane Sandy was going to ruin the plans but the party and trick or treat went off without a hitch.
Wolverine, Frankie (from Monster High) and our little octopus! I never thought Kinley would tolerate that costume but she wore it on three different occasions and never once made a fuss. In fact, I think that she enjoyed the attention. Shane says that she will hate me some day for dressing her in that costume. I hope not. But even if she does, I'm afraid it was worth it.
The girls from the neighborhood orchestrated a plan to dress as each of the Monster High girls. I think they did a fantastic job!
And so, another Halloween party is in the books. It was a bit of a whirlwind but it was fun too. I never was a big fan of Halloween but the kids sure love it and that makes it all worth the effort.
